By Sulayman Bah Gambia on Saturday got a mention at the world boxing stage when Badou Jack rubbished George Groves to Badou Jack 4defend his Super Middleweight World Boxing Council belt. Jack, the only Gambian to have reached this far in the art, defeated two-time British Champion Groves on a majority decision. In what as a crowd-pleasing undercard duel on night of Mayweather bullying of Berto, the 31-year-old erstwhile Gambia Olympic team captain carefully packed blows on Groves -who’d , in pre-match talks, promised to batter the Gambian – on 116-111, 115-112 and 113-114. George, who managed some piecing blows mid in the clash, was clattered down flat on the ring by the Swedish-born Gambian in the first round. It was the British boxer’s third defeat in a row in a world title contest. The 27-year-old George wore a look of disbelief when the umpire raised Jack’s hand in symbol of victory for his opponent as pictured above. Badou who snatched the belt from Anthony Dirrell in April now has his eyes fixed on having a go at IBF super middleweight champion and British Olympic medalist James deGale. James had hoped prior to Saturday’s fight, Grove would shove off Jack in the bid to avenge his defeat to the former but he now faces an unavoidable herculean task of fighting the Gambian ring ace.]]>
