QUESTION OF THE DAY
The Jammeh regime, was characterised by arbitrary arrests and detention without trial. Personalities that came into conflict with the interest of the president were incarcerated.
The High Court had ruled and declared on Wednesday, on 17th November, 2021 that the arrest and detention of three staff of Global Hearts Medical Mission (GLOBAL HOMM) were unlawful and contrary to Section 19 of the 1997 Constitution. Yet the police held two of them in detention.
GLOBAL HOMM has been in a legal battle with Anti Crime unit of the Gambia Police Force and the court entered judgment in favour of GLOBAL HOMM.
Allowing the detention of personalities who are not in the good books of the authorities can only encourage a return to the past. In fact, GLOBAL HOMM, in their statement described the arbitrary arrests and detention as harassment and intimidation.
