QUESTION OF THE DAY

ARE OPPOSITION PARTIES PREPARING FOR THE 2016 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS?

A political party participates in elections in one or two ways. It could select its own candidate in one of two ways. It could either put up its candidate or support the candidates of a coalition.

As it stands, the GDC has declared Mama Kandeh as its presidential candidate. The NCP has declared Dr Lamin Bojang as its presidential candidate. PDOIS has declared Halifa Sallah as its presidential candidate. GMC, GPDP, NRP, PPP and UDP are yet to declare their presidential candidates.

On the issue of coalition, GDC is yet to make public the type of coalition it will accept. NCP proposes a three transitional government. PDOIS supports a primary and its candidate has made it known that if he wins in primary he will be willing to stand as an independent candidate if that is demanded by the others. GPDP supports a primary. NRP is yet to make public the type of coalition it will support. UDP stands for a UDP led coalition. PPP is yet to make public the type of coalition it will support. GMC is yet to declare the type of coalition it will support. No independent candidate has yet declared his/her candidature.

It is anticipated that each party will have to come to a decision and make their position public as soon as possible in order to meet public expectation. This is how matters stand as of today.
