Anytime a journalist passes away it draws a lot of attention and this is particularly true of The Gambia where journalists have faced all sorts of odds for decades.

A journalist is a source of information which is vital for the development of society. Imagine shutting down all media outlets for 24 hours.

The media also serves as a platform for expression of views and open debates. Journalists and the media play an important role in a democracy.

It is often said that the pen is mightier than the sword. This is what makes it necessary for journalists to be tempered. The pen must be controlled by the honest and fearless journalist who loves the truth and presents the news in good faith in the public interest.

It is apparent that such traits cannot but lead to love and admiration for those who have traversed the experience. The worth of a person is indeed how much he or she has contributed to society and not how much wealth or power he/she has bequeathed upon his/her death.
