A WORLD IN DANGER

The media around the globe are focusisng on the assassination of the political leader of Hamas. The killing took place after the inauguration of the newly elected president of Iran.

Some media commentaries consider the assassination as an embarassment to the Iranian Government that invited the leader of Hamas to their inauguration. What should however be of concern to all those who are interested in world peace and rule based world order is the use of assassination as a political weapon.

Many commentators have lost sight of the fact that Ex President Trump was almost eliminated by assassination. Needless to say, the assassin did not use any form of sophistication to carry out the assassination. A number of US presidents were asassinated. A number of US citizens were subjected to either failed assination or were assassinated.

Hence it is very dangerous to romanticise what happened in Iran. No one should promote a culture of assassinations to find grandeur in assassinating a political opponent. Even war has its rules, despite the brutality engendered by its prosecution. Heads of state and leaders of political movements will be very vulnerable if anyone can find them in hotel rooms and eliminate them. No prime minister or president travels with a batallion from home to protect them. The security forces of the home countries should not be challenged in such a way that the resources of countries are utilised just to protect foreign guests.

A culture of assassination and assassins should not be promoted by the media houses of the world. Such a culture ought to be nipped in the bud.

The real task is to prevent further attacks that would lead to loss of life of Israelis and Palestinians. Revenge attacks will never lead to peace. The Israelis and Palestinians are tired of war. The real heroes and heroines of Israelis and Paleestinians are those who feel the pain and are ready to do anything to do away with the excruciating pain to deal with untimely death.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

IS THERE NEED FOR A COMPETITION COMMISSION?

This is the question that many people are asking who observe prices in the cement importation arena and high retail prices in the face of the scaling down of wholesale prices of certain commodities. Foroyaa will begin to explain the fuctions of the competion commission to the public, interview wholesalers and retailers in order to differentiate the prices of the commodities and find out from the authorities of the commission whether they have documented and investigated the complaints of the consumers.

For example, the cement importers who have been asked to pay D180 per bag to GRA are claiming discrimination. Does the Commission agree with them? If not why not? If so why has it not taken action?

Foroyaa will search for the answers and report to the readers.
