Gambia disposed of Ghana and Burkina Faso to win gold in the women category of the Continental Cup beach volleyball hosted in Abidjan.
It was the Gambian side’s second time of winning gold after disposing their opponents in a sequence of fixtures.
In a tourney that serves as qualification for the Rio Olympic Games next year, the Gambian heroines wowed the turn out at the Triechville Sports Complex.
Earlier, the Gambian side shocked their adversaries 21-14 and 21-13 in the first set before Ghana, helped by Gloria Addah, secured a 21-18 win. But with fresh legs in Fatoumatta Ceesayand Abie Kijabi, Gambia launched a comeback to grab their first major win against an opponent out of Zone II.
And speaking after Ghana’s trouncing team player SainabouTambedou said:“It really was one step at a time, and we knew we would get there if we just took it moment by moment.’
The male beach volleyball outfit managed to finish second clutching silver medals.
The male and female teams are funded by the Gambia National Olympic Committee.
