SALARIES OF MAGISTRATES INCENTIVE OR DISINCENTIVE FOR THE PROPER DISPENSATION OF JUSTICE?

A Principal Magistrate is put at grade 10 and receives between D55,
000 to D60, 000 per annum or D5, 000 per month. A Senior Magistrate is
put at grade 9 and receives between D48, 000 and D52, 000 per annum or
D4, 000 per month. A class 1 Magistrate is put at grade 8 and receives
D45, 000 per annum or less than D4, 000 per month. A class 2 Magistrate is put at grade 7 and receives D35, 000 per annum or D3,
000 per month.
The post of Magistrate is of high social status but has no
commensurate financial reward.
Hence, the government needs to recognise the immense sacrifices that
professionals are making in accepting the demanding task of being
magistrates and encourage them to find reward in delivering justice
on the basis of conscience.
