The current furore in the country’s arena is far from being resolved
after controversy beset last weekend’s wrestling Annual General
Meeting.
Stakeholders rejected the Secretary General and Treasurers’ 2012-15
reports as wholly inadequate and voiced dissatisfaction over GWA
executives handling of the sport.The build up to the session has been all but intense and the lengthy
deliberations and counter arguments at the AGM came as no surprise to
many in the wake of sudden fallout between a section of stakeholders
and the Gambia Wrestling Association.
The GWA office-bearers were on the receiving end of a barrage of
derides including lack of transparency to embezzlement of funds.
Last Saturday’s meeting, nearly rescheduled but restored only after an
emergency consultation, was meant for the Matarr Jarju-led leadership
to relay to stakeholders its activities including report on its
financial situation from 2012-2015.
But little gains were made at the gathering as delegates refused to
adopt the presented dossiers. Delegates pressed for a review of the
current constitution and voter eligibility before dispersing. It’s
unclear when a new date will be scheduled for another AGM.
The situation leaves the fate of wrestling in shackles of uncertainty.
Prior to this last meeting, held at the Friendship Hostel, there’d
been much haranguing as stakeholders’ petitioned GWA to the National
Sports Council who urged for calm before advising the traditional
sport governing body to call for an AGM.
