The Chief Executive Officer of The Peace Network, Mr. Alasana Justice Jallow, has called on political leaders to prioritize unity and peace above all else, urging an end to divisive tactics as The Gambia approaches the 2026 general elections.

Speaking during a recent community engagement event in Baddibu Kerewan, Mr. Jallow emphasized that politics should transcend tribal, religious, and regional differences, advocating instead for a shared commitment to national development and progress.

“Politicians have a duty to unite people and communities. Our diversity is a strength, not a weakness. We must leverage it for the prosperity of The Gambia,” Mr. Jallow declared. He emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing the country’s pressing challenges and stressed the need for responsibility and maturity in public discourse.

He continued, “Peace is not a choice; it is the foundation of every nation’s survival. Without peace, development is impossible, and without unity, our democracy cannot stand.”

Drawing on experiences from other countries, Mr. Jallow urged Gambians to heed the lessons of nations scarred by political violence. “I have witnessed countries devastated by political conflict. They live in pain, trauma, and regret. We have the opportunity to choose a different path – the path of peace, unity, and development,” he said.

As election season nears, Mr. Jallow cautioned against pre- and post-election violence, advocating instead for SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) policies and programs that can genuinely transform lives.

“The Gambia is bigger than any political party. We cannot allow politics to create chaos and division in our communities. Together, we have a nation to build,” Mr. Jallow concluded, reaffirming his commitment to fostering unity and peace throughout the country.
