The Gambia Center for Victims of Human Rights Violations (Victims’ Center) has hailed the sentencing of ‘Jungler’ Michael Sang Correa as a significant victory for survivors and families affected by atrocities committed during the Jammeh regime.

“The sentencing of Jungler Michael Sang Correa is a landmark moment in the global fight against impunity,” said the Victims’ Center in a statement. “The long arm of justice is reaching all those who perpetrated human rights violations in the Gambia.”

Correa is the second member of the Junglers to be convicted for crimes against humanity. His sentencing follows the life imprisonment of Bai Lowe in Germany and a 20-year sentence for Ousman Sonko in Switzerland. These convictions bring hope to victims and increase pressure on the Gambian government to pursue justice for those affected by Jammeh-era abuses.

The pursuit of accountability for Jammeh’s crimes continues internationally. The Gambian Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) has called for the prosecution of Jammeh and 69 of his accomplices — many of whom have been arrested in Germany, Switzerland, and the United States. Jammeh himself remains in Equatorial Guinea.

The Victims’ Center expressed its gratitude to the U.S. prosecutors, the Criminal Court of Colorado, and the international community for their commitment to justice. “We will continue to fight and advocate for the rights of Gambians and Non-Gambians to ensure peace and justice,” the Center affirmed, pledging to uphold the spirit of the “NEVER AGAIN” campaign against future abuses.
