HOW ARE WE TO PREVENT CONFLICT ON LAND DISPUTES?

15

The Governor’s Office of the West Coast Region has convened a meeting on the Gunjur/Kartong land dispute. The authorities should address such land disputes, which may result in violence and death as had happened in the Gunjur/Berending land case.

Disputes are inevitable. Where government is absent, people take the law into their own hands and become prosecutors and judges at the same time by claiming entitlements and using force to grab them, only to be arrested, detained, charged and taken before court for acts of impunity. People should therefore be saved from themselves and from the wrath of others. That is why the government should set up means to address such disputes to avoid violent confrontation.

Foroyaa will monitor the efforts being made to resolve the Kartong/Gunjur conflict to know its effectiveness in resolving such disputes. Nonetheless, the government should take the matter onboard to handle more disputes of such nature.
