As the fight against Mpox continues to be a pressing concern following its outbreak pronounced by the Gambia Government, The Association of Non-governmental Organizations (TANGO), in an effort to combat this deadly disease, has taken the initiative to educate and engage Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) on the dangers of Mpox and the necessary precautions.

Through its Thematic Working Group on Health, Population and Family Life, TANGO has organized community events and informative sessions to equip CSOs with the knowledge and tools to tackle the Mpox threat. According to TANGO Chairperson, Yadicon Njie Eribo, this marks a crucial step in strengthening national awareness, preparedness, and response to emerging health threats.

Eribo emphasized the important role of CSOs in informing and supporting the community, particularly vulnerable groups who often lack access to reliable health information. With their reach and influence, CSOs can play a key role in mobilizing the public against Mpox and promoting preventative measures.

“Mpox is not just a medical issue — it is a societal challenge that requires accurate information, early detection, timely response and above all , community engagement,” she said.

Mr Alagie Tambajang, representative of the Thematic Working Group, said Mpox poses new challenges to health infrastructure especially for poor countries.

He said they will equip people with the relevant knowledge to help in the fight against Mpox.

Therefore, he urges the CSOs to sensitise communities about Mpox signs, symptoms, and prevention, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and adhering to health protocols for the safety of every one.

“Come on board and let’s fight Mpox, ” Amina Azeeza, WHO representative said.

She told the CSOs that they have a very crucial role to play in the fight against Mpox; adding that WHO will provide technical support and also continue with their surveillance of Mpox suspected cases.

TANGO’s efforts are a testament to their commitment to the health and well-being of the community. By arming CSOs with the necessary knowledge and resources, TANGO hopes to make a significant impact in the fight against Mpox, not just in the local region but globally as well. Let us join hands with TANGO and CSOs as we take a united stand against Mpox.
