The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) celebrated its 50th anniversary by hosting its inaugural journalism awards in The Gambia on July 25, 2025. The event recognized 12 outstanding journalists from various West African countries, highlighting their significant contributions to the media landscape across the region.

Among the honorees was Gambian journalist Sankulleh Janko, who secured the award for the radio category for his compelling storytelling and insightful reporting for West Africa Democracy Radio (WADR) in Senegal. The ceremony attracted senior ECOWAS officials, government dignitaries, and notable media figures.

In her opening remarks, H.E. Miatta Lily French, the ECOWAS resident representative in The Gambia, described the awards as a strategic move to strengthen collaboration between ECOWAS and the media. “These awards symbolize our commitment to promoting regional solidarity and development,” she stated.

More than 200 submissions from 12 member states were evaluated by a panel of seasoned experts, reflecting the depth and quality of journalism in West Africa. Hon. Abdou Kolley, representing the ECOWAS Commission, emphasized the crucial role journalists play as defenders of democracy and catalysts for social change.

Isatou Keita, president of the Gambia Press Union, noted the event’s significance for journalism in the region, emphasizing the need for continued protection and support for media personnel. “This award affirms the critical role of journalism in democracy and development,” she declared.

The event marked a proud moment for Gambia and highlighted the promising future for journalism in the region, with calls for the ECOWAS Journalism Awards to become an annual event to foster excellence and collaboration among media professionals.
