Clarification on “Justice Slows as Courts Shut Before Time ” A Response from the Judicial Administration

Chief Justice Hassan Jallow

Banjul, 10th July 2025: The Judiciary of The Gambia has taken note of the article published in the Foroyaa Newspaper dated July 7, 2025, under the headline “Justice Slows as Courts Shut Before Time” by Mr. Yankuba Jallow.

While we appreciate the interest in the efficiency of the Justice system, we find the headline to be misleading. The impression that courts are Shut or closed is inaccurate and does not reflect the reality of court operations. All Magistrates’ and Superior Courts remain open and fully functional. Judicial officers have not abandoned their duties, and the Courts have not closed prematurely.

It is important to clarify that courts do not operate solely by sitting continuously throughout the day. Judicial work is multifaceted, some hours often in the afternoons are reserved for work in chambers, including the writing of rulings and judgments, legal research, and administrative duties. The working hours of judicial officers are therefore complex and cannot be gauged solely by courtroom presence. Furthermore, the article contains broad and generalized allegations without adequate specificity.

The absence of case numbers, dates, or particularized incidents makes it difficult for the Judiciary to verify or address the concerns potential for constructive dialogue and meaningful reform. Reporting of this nature undermines the potential for constructive dialogue and meaningful reform. We respectfully urge Foroyaa and the wider media to engage in balanced, factual, and solutionoriented journalism.

Specific complaints, when properly presented, allow the administration to investigate, intervene and take corrective action where necessary. The Judiciary remains committed to transparency, access to justice, and ongoing improvements in service delivery. Constructive engagement and accurate reporting are vital to achieving these goals.

Signed:

Mr Abdou Conteh

Judicial Secretary
