Following the publication in the Foroyaa, earlier this week, of the complaints of uncollected garbage by
both the vendors and residents within the neighbourhood of Marche Tayal in Tallinding, the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) has positively responded by sending a team to clear all the rubbish at the said place yesterday.The vendors and residents have expressed concern over the threat being posed to their health by the pile of uncollected garbage at a dumpsite in the vicinity of the market which, apart from being an eye sore and a source of unbearable stench, has been transformed into a breeding ground for insects, worms and rodents. They appealed to the Council to clear the garbage in order to safeguard the health of the vendors, residents and customers alike.
Talking to Foroyaa, Pa Khalifa Sanyang, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KMC, said they are unable to effectively manage waste in the municipality as they have limited resources in terms of mobility to carry out their work. He, however, noted Council’s commitment to endeavor to address the concerns of the residents within the municipality.
Visiting the Marche Tayal market in Tallinding yesterday, this reporter found the Council waste disposal team busy at work clearing the pile of uncollected garbage from the said dumpsite.
One of the workers engaged in the cleaning confirmed the shortage of vehicles, adding that this is a major problem that is affecting their work in collecting rubbish regularly as well as during the monthly ‘set settal’ cleansing exercise.
The residents and vendors expressed their appreciation for this swift response by the Council.
“We are pleased and very delighted that our concerns are being addressed by KMC and that the dumpsite is now cleared,” said one of residents.
She, however, added that they are requesting Council to relocate the dumpsite to another place.]]>
