The Ministry of Justice has announced a major milestone in The Gambia’s anti-corruption drive, confirming the selection of a Chairperson and two Commissioners for the long-awaited Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC)—a key institution established under the Anti-Corruption Act, 2023.

In a press release issued on 21st May 2025, the Ministry stated that the process was guided by principles of transparency, merit, and inclusivity, with the aim of strengthening accountability in public service.

“A Vetting Committee composed of experts from both government and civil society was constituted to oversee a fair and competitive selection process,” the statement said.

Following a public call for applications in February 2025, the Ministry received 52 applications, out of which 29 candidates were shortlisted based on rigorous criteria. Interviews were held in April, resulting in a final list of eight highly qualified candidates with expertise in law, finance, and governance, and with a deliberate effort to ensure gender balance.

The Final Report of the Vetting Committee has now been submitted to the Cabinet. The President and the National Assembly are expected to make the final appointments soon, marking the final steps before the operationalisation of the ACC.

“The Government remains firmly committed to combating corruption in all its forms and recognises the ACC as a central pillar in this endeavour,” the Ministry emphasised.

The Justice Ministry also expressed gratitude to all applicants, stakeholders, and Vetting Committee members for their participation and contributions, calling on the public to support ongoing efforts to promote integrity and good governance in The Gambia.

Once operational, the ACC will play a critical role in investigating and prosecuting corruption-related offences, as part of broader institutional reforms aimed at restoring public trust in governance.
