The National Assembly is an oversight institution. Hence rumours on important matters should not be allowed to spread when the facts could be teased out through parliamentary inquiry.Section 109(1)(c) of the Constitution of the Republic states:”The National Assembly shall appoint such other standing or other committees as it considers necessary for the exercise of its functions.”Subsection (2) adds

“Committees may be appointed—

(a) to investigate or inquire into the activities or administration of ministries or departments of the Government, and such investigation or inquiry may extend to making proposals for legislation;

(b) to investigate any matter of public importance.”
The National Assembly is therefore empowered to set up committees to inquire into matters of public concern regarding state administration. The Nation is in fact waiting for details of the inquiry into the 30 million dollars oil saga.In short, such inquiries should be speedy and thorough to enable the public to know the truth.in the same vein, a speedy and thorough inquiry into the sale of ex president Jammeh’s assets would enable the public to know the truth.Foroyaa will cover the proceedings to give all the details necessary in the public interest.
