California State University Awards Gambia’s Chief Justice

His Lordship Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow has been awarded the 2025 Peace and Justice Award by California State University on 26 April 2025 at the 23rd Annual African/Diaspora Conference on Restoring Justice in Sacramento, California, according to a dispatch shared with Foroyaa.

“His Lordship the Hon. Chief Justice Hassan B. Jallow CRG has been the recipient of the 2025 Peace and Justice Award by California State University on the 26th April 2025 at the 23rd Annual African/Diaspora Conference on Restoring Justice in Sacramento, California. 

This award was conferred on His Lordship in recognition of his exemplary leadership and outstanding contributions in the creation of access to justice in The Gambia as well as stellar roles in international law, human rights, peace and justice especially through (his) services as Attorney General and Chief Justice of The Gambia, Judge of the Special Court for Sierra Leone and Chief Prosecutor of the UNICTR for Rwanda and of the UNIMICT for Rwanda and Ex-Yugoslavia. 

The award was presented to His Lordship by the President of the University, Prof. Dr. Luke Wood, and Director of the Center for African Peace and Justice, Prof. Dr. Ernest Uwazie. Each year, the Peace Award is presented in recognition of outstanding contributions in various components of peace and conflict resolution in or on Africa or among people of African Descent in the diaspora. 

His Lordship accepted the award not just as a tribute to him but to all those who contributed to it in different ways, his family, friends, professional colleagues, and the communities concerned. The following paragraph forms part of his acceptance remarks: 

“The struggle for peace and justice is a continuous and never-ending one. We must all walk the journey for justice, alone and together, to enable us to travel together far and fast. Justice is the strongest foundation with respect for the rule of law, human rights, judicial independence, and democratic principles. No lasting peace without justice and no progress without peace. We must all work together to make our nations’ communities of justice, of peace, and thus of progress”. 

His Lordship also participated and presented a paper at the University Conference on Reparation and Restorative Justice in the context of Gambia, Africa, and the UN.”
