ARE MEDIA PRACTITIONERS FAIRLY REMUNERATED?

14

Press freedom day is the time to focus on the environment that makes it difficult or easier for media practitioners to operate. It is time to take stock of the challenges and achievements of those whose role it is to inform, entertain and advocate for better practice and standards in rendering services to the public. The growth of media houses and their diverse nature have also raised the question of terms and condition of work of media practitioners.

Hence during the celebration of World Press Freedom Day, the major focus was on the terms and condition of media practitioners. It is therefore necessary for the Gambia Press Union (GPU), the Newspaper Publishers Association (NePA) and the Broadcasters Association of The Gambia (BAG) to go back to the drawing board to build consensus on a draft memorandum of understanding that is prepared for signature so that all stakeholders will sign at one go. This is urgent in order to promote staff motivation.
