As a bold and forward-looking framework that will guide the nation’s continued efforts to achieve gender equality, social justice and inclusive development for the next decades, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare in partnership with regional authorities, has embarked on a five-day launch of the National Gender Policy 2025-2034 across the regions.
Speaking at the opening ceremony on behalf of the Governor of URR, Deputy Governor Lamin Jaiteh said the event follows the historic national launch presided over by President Adama Barrow, calling it a powerful testament of political commitment at the highest level and commitment to the transformation of the gender landscape of the Gambia.

“As Regional Governors, we are honored to carry this momentum forward and ensure that the aspirations articulated at the national level are realized at the community level, where transformation truly begins,” Deputy Governor Jaiteh said. Mr. Jaiteh also seized the opportunity to express appreciation for the visionary leadership, dedication, and tireless efforts of the Ministry in the development of the policy.
“The journey to this launch has been marked by extensive nationwide consultations, inclusive dialogue, and evidence-based research. The process ensured that the voices of all women and men, girls and boys, persons with disabilities, the elderly, youth, and marginalized communities were not only heard, but reflected in the priorities and actions of the policy,” he concludes.

Mr. Kajali Sonko, the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare, briefly highlighted the history of the policies implemented in the Gambia, namely: the National Policy for the Advancement of Gambian Women (1999-2009) and the Gender and Women Empowerment Policy (2010-2020).

DPS Sonko pointed out that the formulation of this policy was participatory, with extensive consultations with communities and other stakeholders. He called on participants to disseminate what has been assimilated to all the communities at large. Mr. Sonko also hailed stakeholders and partners for their immense contribution not only in the formulation of the policy but also in the promotion of gender equality, equity, and empowerment for women and girls.
