The National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI), in collaboration with the International Centre for Bio saline Agriculture (ICBA), concluded a five-day Hands-On Training on Irrigation system installation and management held in Darsilami Village West Coast Region from 8th – 12th April 2025.

The training is funded by the RESADE project, which is dedicated to promoting resilient and sustainable agriculture development in the face of environmental challenges. RESADE is a five-year project funded by IFAD and BADEA. The project focused entirely on salinity management, and one of its major components is the establishment of the Best Practice Hub (PBH)

The training is designed to build the capacity of farmers, extension workers, and technicians in the practical aspect of irrigation system design and installation management with a special focus on addressing issues related to soil and water salinity. As salinity continues to pose a significant threat to agricultural productivity in many parts of the country, it is vital to adopt irrigation practices that are not only efficient but also salinity-aware.

Dr. Jalamang Camara of NARI praised the initiative, emphasizing the critical role of water management in boosting agricultural productivity, especially amid climate variability. And there’s exciting news – The Gambia emerged as one of the top-performing countries, earning the right to establish a second Best Practice Hub (BPH) under the RESADE project!

Dr. Zied Hammami from ICBA echoed the importance of water and fertilizer in food production and pledged continued collaboration with NARI to showcase innovative agricultural technologies.

On behalf of the Director General, Dr. Ismaila Mbenga expressed gratitude to the local community and all partners for their unwavering support, noting that the joint effort was key to the training’s success.
