21-Gun Salute for Fallen Navy Officer, Able Seaman Mendy

The Gambia Armed Forces High Command, alongside family, friends, and the people of Jagil in Foni, gathered on Monday, 31st March 2025, to pay their final respects to Able Seaman Mendy Richard of the Gambia Navy. The late navy rating lost his life in a tragic fire incident at the Naval Base in Banjul while serving as the duty fuel attendant on Friday, 28th March 2025. The fire broke out as a fuel tanker was offloading fuel at the Navy’s fuel depot, leading to the untimely demise of the brave officer.

In a solemn ceremony, Able Seaman Richard was laid to rest with full military and Christian honours. The event was attended by top government officials, including Minister of Defence Sering Modou Njie, who represented President Adama Barrow, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. Minister of Higher Education, Professor Pierre Gomez, was also present, alongside the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Mamat OA Cham, his deputy, Major General Ousman Gomez, and the Commander of the Gambia Navy, Commodore Sambou Barrow. Colonel Omar B. Bojang, the Deputy National Security Adviser to the President, was in attendance, as well as the Commanding Officer of the Naval Command, Commander Fara Jobe, and numerous senior military officers. The CEO of Jah Oil Company, along with his family and staff, also paid their respects, underscoring the far-reaching impact of Richard’s service.

The funeral service was marked by a poignant memorial mass led by Major Father Joseph Carl Gomez, the military chaplain, accompanied by a fellow priest. They delivered heartfelt prayers and words of comfort, bringing solace to the grieving family and community.

The moving tribute concluded with a 21-gun salute, a traditional military honour reserved for fallen heroes, signifying the nation’s deep appreciation for the sacrifice of Able Seaman Mendy Richard. His unwavering dedication to duty and country will be remembered as a symbol of bravery and service.
