The Gambian Parliament is set to consider a motion to ratify a visa exemption agreement between The Gambia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The motion, to be tabled by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad, Momodou Tangara, is scheduled for Tuesday, March 4, 2025.

This development was disclosed in the approved agenda for the First Ordinary Session of the National Assembly by the Office of the Clerk. According to the Clerk’s Office, the ratification falls under Section 79(1)(c) of the 1997 Constitution, which mandates parliamentary approval for international agreements.

“The National Assembly is expected to consider and ratify the Mutual Visa Exemption Agreement for Diplomatic and Service Passport Holders between the Republic of The Gambia and The United Arab Emirates,” the Clerk’s Office stated.

Ahead of the visa exemption motion, the National Assembly will deliberate on the Intellectual Property Bill 2023 and the Election Bill 2021, in accordance with Standing Order 72. The Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dawda Jallow will present these bills.

Parliament’s agenda also includes the first edition of oral question-and-answer sessions with cabinet members on Wednesday, March 5, 2025. Key officials expected to face parliamentary scrutiny include His Excellency the Vice President, along with the Ministers for Finance and Economic Affairs, Justice, Information, Trade and Employment, Interior, Youth and Sports, Agriculture, and Tourism, Arts, and Culture.

The much-anticipated Draft Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia (Promulgation) Bill, 2024, is also set for its second reading on March 27, 2025. At this stage, National Assembly Members (NAMs) will debate the bill’s merits and principles. However, with the session ending soon, the likelihood of the bill passing before adjournment remains uncertain.

As the parliamentary session unfolds, the ratification of the UAE visa exemption agreement and the debate on key legislative matters will be closely watched by the public and stakeholders.
