THE CHIEF JUSTICE AND THE CONSTITUTION OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE GAMBIA (PROMULGATION) BILL 2024

74

When the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia (Promulgation) Bill 2020 was taken to parliament, there was a debate whether it should be approved wholesale by the National Assembly members or make it susceptible to amendments. If any person now holds the view that the National Assembly members could not alter the provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia (Promulgation) Bill 2024, those views should be set aside as the highest judicial authority said during the legal year ceremony that the recommendations of the judiciary should be taken into consideration by those engaged in the constitution making process.

The ball is now in the court of the National Assembly members. What is proposed by the Chief Justice could only be taken into consideration if the bill passes the second reading. All eyes are now cast on the National Assembly members. Foroyaa will record the proceedings on the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia (Promulgation) Bill for posterity. The future will give its verdict on who was on the right side and who was on the wrong side.
