The National Assembly Member for Serrekunda, Hon. Musa Cham, presented scholarship packages worth D50,000.00 to deserving students within his constituency last Friday, 7 February 2025.
The initiative aims to provide support and assistance towards the financing of the education of deserving students within Serekunda Constituency, and the presentation saw each student go home with a cheque amounting to Five Thousand Dalasi (D5000), that will help them to pay their tuition fees.
The scholarship packages were given under the “GUI GUE” Scholarship Program which comprises two components: academic merit-based awards and humanitarian-based awards, and the total number of Scholarships that will be offered will depend on the availability of funds.
To qualify for this scholarship or financial assistance, one must be a registered voter determined by the IEC or a resident of Serekunda Constituency, and deserving students in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics (S.T.E.M.) and the skills trade, will be given priority.
The program is funded through the allowances received by Hon. Cham and the contributions made by members of the program within the constituency.
“Our objective is to establish a fund in Serrekunda (London Corner and Bartez Ward), to ensure that deserving students are supported through the fund, and to ensure that they have access to education,” Hon. Cham explained.
He said together with his colleagues from Serrekunda residing in the diaspora, they have joined hands towards helping with the payment of school fees of students within the constituency through their contributions. He said each student will be given a cheque of D5,000 to enable them to settle their school fees or other bills.
“If all goes as planned, the primary objective is to cover a whole year’s academic tuition for deserving students,” he assured.
While thanking members of the program from Serrekunda based in the diaspora for the support, he urged others both at home or within the diaspora to join in the efforts of making education accessible to deserving students.
Fatou Chune, whose child benefited from the package, expressed gratitude and thanks to Hon. Cham for helping students attain their academic aspirations.
Jorr Jongo, another parent whose child is a beneficiary, said Hon. Cham has been rendering such critical support to their children even when he was a councilor.
“Hon. Cham assists the people of the constituency regardless of their backgrounds. We expressed thanks to Hon. Cham and co., for their support which will ensure that our children have brighter futures,” she said.
