The Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) on Monday, January 27, 2025, commenced ‘Operation Sanity’ to enforce the Council’s by-laws and address various issues such as nuisance, removal of sand and gravel, private sewage pipes, disposal of products, and hazardous substances.
The operation, according to the Council, is geared towards upholding the Council’s regulations and ensuring a clean and safe environment for all residents of Kanifing Municipality (KM).
Mr Sheriff Janko, a member of the KMC Anti-Littering Inspection Unit, said: “The purpose of the exercise is to ensure that we have a clean environment. Our environment is dirty and it is everybody’s concern. The operation seeks to ensure that wastes are collected and people do not litter any way they want.”
“The owners of the gravels, sand, and stones packed for construction on the roadsides are fined and asked to put the materials inside their compounds to ensure that roads and streets are accessible. We are only interested in the waste and obstructions caused by gravel and sand.,” he said.
Offenders were fined one thousand Dalasi (D1,000) on the spot and given forty-eight hours to remove their gravel, heaps of sand, mechanical garages, scrap metal shops, and spillages.
Landlords were also advised not to litter or burn their waste disposals because it is hazardous to the public
