KMC is supposed to operate on the basis of the rule of law. The Local Government Act provides the KMC, like all other councils, with the power to establish markets and collect duties to maintain and upgrade them.
It is the duty of the KMC to ensure the duties they collect are from people selling in a legally established place called a market or from vendors who occupy legally identified places designed by KMC for trading purposes.
Foroyaa will find out from the KMC what they are doing to provide market women with markets that has all the public facilities required for a market.
There is need to put an end to the cat and mouse game where vendors occupy the streets only to be occasionally removed by the security forces to make the roads pliable by ambulances and other commercial and private vehicles. Chaos in the streets is not a mark of good governance, either for central or local government.
May be market women union or vendors union should be established to properly articulate and defend those who wish to market their goods in a secure, safe and proper environment conducive for respectable interaction between vendors, the community, local and central government.
