University of the Gambia {UTG} and Management Development Institute {MDI} on Monday received 80 boxes of books from The Association of Non-Government Organisation (TANGO}.

UTG received a total 60 boxes while 20 boxes for MDI.

The books, according to organizers, were secured by TANGO through Book Aid International based in the United Kingdom. TANGO has a partnership with Book Aid International to provide relevant books to institutions of higher education as well as the ministry of Basic and Secondary School.

Speaking before the handing-over, YadiconNjieEribo, chairperson of TANGO said this is the first consignment of books they received from Aid International but more is on the pipeline.

‘This is the first consignment from this,’ she said.

Madam Eribo said they want to promote the use of books and reading as well as setting up a library.

She said Book Aid International is working with publishing houses in the UK to provide books which will be shared among learning institutions in the country.

She added that books are powerful things; therefore, learning institutions need supplement books.

‘These books are to complement the ones you have and to encourage the culture of reading,’ she said.

She further advised the duo beneficiaries to share appropriate books among themselves.

She told the duo beneficiaries TANGO will be doing an assessment report on the book to see how they have been utilised.

She further added that she hopes these books will benefit students, lecturers, and staff.

She said that students and children should be encouraged to read because there is no shortcut to success.

‘Books should play an important role in our education. We need libraries for students because some of them may not have the resources to buy books,’ he said.

AlieuJarjue, the representative of UTG said they are delighted to receive the books from TANGO.

‘The books will benefit the present and future generation of the country,’ he added.

He added that the donation is timely as the university is geared toward stocking its newly built library in Faraba.

‘Equality education cannot be achieved without books,’ he added.

AlagieSillahConteh, the representative of MDI, also expressed their appreciation for the donation.

He said that MDI is in need of books in their library which currently has few books.

‘We still need more books,’ he said.

He assured the donor of the good usage of the book and they welcome future donations.
