It is very strange for an alkaloship dispute to emerge in Ngain Sanjal when the Constitution is very clear on what should be done when a vacancy occurs in the office of Alkalo. According to section 59 of the Constitution,
“(1) The Minister responsible for local government shall appoint an Alkalo in consultation with the Regional Governors and District Seyfo or Chairperson of the Kanifing Municipal Council, as the case may be.
(2) The Minister shall, in making an appointment under subsection (1), take into account traditional lines of inheritance.”
Hence each minister is required to do as stipulated in section 59 to facilitate the appointment of an Alkalo. No dispute therefore is permissible as long as the spirit and letter of the Constitution are adhered to.
