The Governor of URR Samba Bah, accompanied by the Chairperson of Basse Area Council Muhammad Ceesay, on Monday, 30 October 2023 presided over the foundation stone laying ceremony of the first five-star hotel in Basse.

According to Governor Bah, the significance of the five-star hotel for the region cannot be over emphasized knowing the economic potential and business property such infrastructure can bring for Basse.

According to him, URR hosts International events and is already planning to host one in the not too distant future, noting that in the case of international events, such a facility will facilitate the accommodation of dignitaries, which was a challenge.

He said when completed, the facility will change the shape and infrastructural addition for the URR. He commended Dr. Haruna Camara and his foundation for what he called the unprecedented infrastructural development in URR, and thanked them for coming up with this idea of constructing such a hotel in the Region.

For his part, the chairperson of Basse Area Council Muhammad Ceesay, called on the people of Basse particularly Manneh Kunda, where the said hotel will be constructed, to come out and support, because as he said, Dr Camara and his Taiba foundation are not doing this themselves but people of the Region.

“In doing this, we all need to collaborate and support the project. The council will also be available to monitor and see where they can come in and support, for the successful implementation and completion of the project,” chairperson Ceesay said.

Dr Haruna M Camara, the CEO of Taiba foundation and native of Numuyel village in Jimara District of the URR, said he decided to build the hotel in the region, because Basse has no hotels of such quality but guest houses. He said the hotel will have 38 bedrooms, a standard conference hall and a shopping mall.

According to Dr. Camara, it will be named ‘Numuyel’ hotel just like Numuyel Plaza in Kombo and will be under the management of Busra Trading and Construction Company.

For the information of the readership, URR is among the most active economic and commercial hubs of the country and its main town Basse, is viewed by many as the second capital of the Gambia. However, the above view becomes impalpable due to absence of standard infrastructural developments like such hotels, available only in the urban areas.
