The monitoring of the sidewalks and buildings adjacent to primary and secondary roads and the initiative taken to clear these facilities of all unauthorized impediments and obstructions could have served a developmental purpose if those affected because of deprivation of their livelihoods were fully supported to have alternatives to ensure their social protection.

There is need to find out why people often return to the very places from which they were earlier displaced. Many are being told that they will be arrested and prosecuted if they re-occupy places from where they were earlier dislodged.

What must be avoided is selective justice where eyes are closed to certain infringements while others are prosecuted. It is also not in line with the principle of accountability if anyone is asked to pay a fine without the order of a court. We therefore hope that every action to enforce the law will be done with integrity.
