A commission of inquiry was established before the 2023 local government elections were held. The commission should have completed its work. However, the period is reported to be extended. In the interim, there have been reports of inquiry, suspension and dismissal of staff of the council.

All councils are subjected to annual auditing exercise and auditors are supposed to tease out all fraudulent activities which should be referred to the police for investigation. It is therefore important that councils are properly guided on when to conduct audits or special audit to gather sufficient facts to allege corruption and follow due process to move beyond allegation and facilitate the conviction of accused persons of corrupt practices. This is the only way to avoid litigation of wrongful dismissal of staff.
