TheUniversity of The Gambia on Monday, 27th February 2023, welcomed another batch of new students at an orientation ceremony held at the University’s administration building in Kanifing.
Five hundred and fifty-two students have been admitted to various schools of the University except the schools of law and medicine, that have not enrolled any student for the semester.
The orientation is aimed at equipping the new intakes with relevant information related to their studies at the University, and to inform them about the fundamental principles and core values of the university regarding standard delivery in education.
As always, the event was graced by Vice Chancellor of the University and the Deans of various schools including professors, administrative heads, student union presidents and the new intakes.
Professor Herbert Robinson while addressing the fresh students said each of them has every right to be part of the what he called the ‘milestone achievement’, and congratulated them as well.
Prof Robinson added that the school is more than two decades old and has delivered productive and responsible people for the greater good of all.
Robinson said the school will introduce new courses to meet the demand of The Gambia and the sub-region at-large, and called on the new intakes to take up education seriously. He assured them that there is competent and experienced professors and lecturers who will provide them with all learning requirements, to ensure that their time at the University is worth the while. He adviced the students to be responsible and avoid any malpractice or mis-conduct that will derail or demean their educational career.
Momodou Lamin Tarro, the registrar at the University said the main aim of the orientation is to equip the new students with the fundamental principles, norms and values of the said institution, and that it is important for the students to know the core values of the institution. He urge them to always be abiding students.
Tarro informed the new intakes that all new students are allowed to join any association registered within the university, and also called on them to maintain proper dress codes and discipline as all times.
Mr. Tarro called on students to make best use of the social media in a way that will add value to their lives, as well as the Student Union which he described as a strong pillar in students affairs.
Keme Fatty, current president of University student union’s 21st executive council commended all the new intakes for being enrolled, and said the institution serves as solution to societal problems, by providing profound contributions to national development. He ssaid the student union serves as an umbrella body that promotes the welfare of students, and call on them to build interest in sub-association within various schools at University.
Dr. Abibatou Drammeh, Director of students affairs and alumni, said it was indeed an honour to grace again yet another orientation ceremony of the university and added that there is need for students to take up their studies with seriousness.
