WAFU Zone A Championship: Queen Scorpions To Leave Banjul For Cape Verde Today

The female scorpions of The Gambia and delegation will leave Banjul on Wednesday via Dakar where they will join a special flight to Cape Verde, where the West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Zone A women’s football championship will be staged from the 20th to 30th January 2023.

The female scorpions entered into camp on Sunday evening as they ready themselves for the forthcoming sub-region’s women’s championship which is in its second edition.  

“The Gambia is taking part in the championship for the second time running after the maiden edition in Sierra Leone 2020. The Cape Verde Championship will be the first under our President Lamin Kaba Bajo who is the current President of WAFU Zone A after his ascension to the top leadership at the 44th General Assembly of CAF held on the 10th August 2022 in arusha Tanzania,” the GFF media stated.

The football federation further said as part of their policy to empower women’s football and women’s football activities, the national team and delegation comprises a female dominated set up with GFF Executive Committee Member and Vice Chairperson of Women’s football Committee Arret Njie Jah as the Hhad of delegation.

“Our fourth Vice President Ms Sainabou Cham is also appointed by WAFU as part of the Technical Study Group for the championship. Two of our female Referees Fatou Ngum and Jainaba Manneh are also appointed by WAFU as Match officials to join their selected colleagues from the Zone A block,” GFF media stated.

The country’s football body disclosed that the national team’s preparation and participation in the aforesaid competition is fully funded by GFF.
