QUESTION OF THE DAY
Regulating the media through PURA / Media Council or court action. Democratic institutions should be protected in order to be fine tuned to be fit for purpose. At this stage of the democratic evolution, one would have expected the state to rely on the media council to raise understanding of good media practice and resolve disputes whenever they arise, instead of burdening the courts with matters which could be resolved through alternative dispute measures.
It is hoped that a recent trend towards arrest and prosecution of media practitioners would be tempered by a sense of realism. The country needs a democratic image to promote the well being of the people. Confrontation with media houses would only make the situation less fertile for reshaping the democratic political life of the people which thrives on unhindered freedom of expression.
