The Gambian army has on Saturday confirmed the arrest and detention of several military guards.
Major Lamin K. Sanyang, army spokesperson told this paper that the guards, who were on duty at the defence headquarters in Banjul on 7th – 8th March 2020, are currently detained in relation to a break-in which resulted in some coupons missing in the office of one of the officers.
He remakes: “These are none commissioned soldiers. They are in charge of the security of the defence headquarters.”
He explained the arrest of these guards came when the officer in charge of storage and distribution of GAF fuel coupons, realised that some fuel coupons were missing in his office. He added the officer in charge immediately reported the matter to the Military Police Chief.
According to the army spokesperson, the guards are currently detained at Yundum Barracks and investigation into the matter is ongoing.
On whether charges have been pressed against the said detainees, he responded: “No, no, the matter is being investigated so until we are done – because it involves theft.”
“I can’t give numbers of arrestees because we are investigating them,” he said.
He added: “In order not to compromise the investigations, I ask that you give us time until we resume on (Tuesday)14 April to update you further on the matter.“
