Vintage Brikama continued their unbeaten stroll in the league but such
a feat was threatened by a slow-pace sailing Banjul Hawks over the
weekend.
Sulayman Kuyateh and his men are one of two teams of the division yetto gulp a taste of defeat -grabbing an impressive seventeen out of
possible twenty-seven points on offer in as nine domestic league
matches.
The Sateba outfit hasn’t lay claims on the staked prize of the league
for three years since their audacious exploits in 2011.
Determined to shred apart such circles, Kuyateh has geared up his
charges as they top the standings with an unblemished run.
However their topping of the twelve-team-standings hasn’t come without
struggle after they survived a scare from a resolute Hawks last week
who forced a share of the spoils following a 2-2 score in a
four-goal-thriller duel.
This ultimately narrowed their initial two-point at the top to one
ahead of Real de Banjul who moved to second after easing past
bottom-placed Serrekunda United.
Results make the race for the title even tighter with Gamtel, on
fifteen points, playing yesterday Sunday against Gambia Armed Forces.
A win – which tops Tapha Manneh’s wish-list – will see the telecom
giants unseat Brikama atop on eighteen points and a draw still propels
them to joint-second.
In another fixture, Bombada plummeted to their third defeat of the
season having bit the dust to 2010 league champions and once-beaten
Alagie Sarr’s Gambia Ports Authority on final 1-0 score.
The outcome makes for an intriguing statistical reading with three
clubs; Ports, Bomdaba and Real on joint-second sixteen points on each
as of Saturday.
Elsewhere, one step below the GFF First Eco sponsored premier league,
promotion-chasing Steve Biko leads on eighteen points winning all
their six matches after trouncing a stuttering KGI 1-0 in their last
match.
Samger Football Club is second in the second tier but didn’t return
to action after their showdown with Young Africans was put off last
week. Serrekunda East suffered the heaviest of weekend defeats after
getting walloped 3-1.
Blue Star and Gambia Immigration FC grinded out a 2-2 affair and
Tallinding humbled Sea View 1-0 in other second division fixtures.
