Former vice president of The Gambia Dr. Isatou Njie Saidy is expected to appear before the Truth Commission on Thursday, reliable sources told Foroyaa.
Dr. Saidy, who is the longest serving VP in The Gambia, is expected to testify in connection with the 10/11 April 2000 students’ demonstration.
Top government officials at the chain of command during the demonstration have already appeared before the Truth Commission.
These include former Inspector General of Police Rex King; former Interior Minister Ousman Badjie, and former army Chief of Staff, Babucarr Jatta.
Ex-President Yahya Jammeh was out of the country when the demonstration took place.
Jammeh was in Havana, Cuba, attending a conference of the Non-Alliance Movement.
Evidences before the Truth Commission suggested that former president Jammeh gave orders to the vice president to ‘take care’ of the the demonstrators.
The students’ demonstration led to the massacre of 16 people, including 14 students.
The TRRC was set up in 2017 to probe into the human rights violation committed in the 22-year-rule of ex-president Jammeh.
