According to section 207 of the constitution, it is the duty of the media to ensure that government is held accountable to the public. This is why the media and media practitioners should not be put in chains. They should be free to publish divergent views and dissenting opinions. This is what will make it possible for transparency and accountability to become the order of the day. The December presidential election and the way the impasse was handled have given Gambia the credit it deserves to be among the peace loving and democratic countries of the world. This is why press freedom day witnessed a solidarity march, a symposium and the handing over of a petition to the minister of information. This symbolic gesture should now set the pace for the repealing of all draconian media laws which coalition 2016 has promised to abrogate. All media practitioners are convinced that the draconian media laws have no place in a democracy.
