QUESTION OF THE DAY
WHO COULD BE ELECTED SPEAKER OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY
Section 93 of the Constitution states:
“The Speaker of the National Assembly and the deputy Speaker shall be elected by the members of the Assembly from among the nominated members.”
This section indicates how a Speaker is elected from nominated members of the National Assembly. Under section 88 five members of the National Assembly are nominated by the president to be members of the National Assembly. The Speaker and Deputy Speaker are elected from the ranks of the members of the National Assembly.
A political party or coalition has to win the majority of seats in the National Assembly before a Speaker could be elected by relying on their majority.
