The Police Public Relation Officer of the Gambia Police Force (PRO), Inspector Foday Conta, said they are working very hard to ensure that all those who are detained unlawfully are released as ordered by President Adama Barrow.
He was talking to this reporter in an interview in his office yesterday, 6th February, 2017 at police headquarters in Banjul.
According to the police PRO, they have released many of those who were unlawfully detained but not all.
Inspector Conta said it is not easy with them since it is a long process. ‘’People may think that all the detainees should be released but is not that. We are given the mandate to release only those that are unlawfully arrested and detained and those who are not taken to court for trial,’’ he said.
PRO Conta appealed to the relatives of those who are yet to be released to be patient with them as they are working to facilitate their release. ‘’We are not happy to keep people in our custody or in prison since we are responsible for all detainees as we feed them every day, take care of their medical treatment and other things which is expensive,’’ he added.
It has been reported that Mr. Tumani Jallow, who was arrested by the NIA in October 2016 while at his workplace at state house, is yet to be released. His relatives have made several enquires at different detention centres across the country but could not trace him.
Ebrima Sanyang, a resident of Farato, who was arrested and initially taken to Farato police station and later to mile two prison, is still not released.
