CRR Rice Farmers’ President Released After 278 days incommunicado

Haruna Gassama, President of the CRR Rice Farmers’ Cooperative Ltd, has been released on Wednesday, 25 January, 2017 after spending 278 days in incommunicado detention at Janjanbureh Central Prison.

Mr. Gassama, who was elected unopposed as the president of the rice farmers’cooperative at a convergence held at the Brikamaba School grounds 5 January 2012, was first arrested on the 2 March 2015 – the very day when officials from the Sheriff Division of the high court came to Lower Fulladu District to execute order of a judgment delivered on the 12 January 2015 which is in favour of the plaintiff (Mr. Gassama and his newly elected committee).

He was detained incommunicado at the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) headquarters in Banjul and released on Thursday, 3 September, 2015 after having been held for 185 days.

He was re-arrested by plain clothes officers for the second time on Saturday, 23 April 2016 after returning from his rice field at around 1pm at his home in Dasilami prior to being taken to the Brikamaba police station and later to Janjanbureh prison where he was detained up to the time of his release on Wednesday.

His motor cycle was also taken by the Brikamaba police.
