The National Association of Gambia Nurses and Midwives (NAGaNM) is a professional body which comprise both nurses and midwives trained and practising in The Gambia fundamentally responsible for promoting health; preventing illness; restoring health; and alleviating pain and suffering; and also committed to the highest quality of care for all women, newborns and their families.
Our mission is to strive for excellence in health care delivery in The Gambia through improvement of standards in nursing and midwifery education, practice, research and management for improve health care outcomes for The Gambian population.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of NAGaNM convened an emergency meeting on Wednesday, 14 December 2016 to discuss the current political situation of our beloved nation. Despite being apolitical, NAGaNM wish to associate and re-echo the statements made by both the Medical and Dental Association of The Gambia and The Gambia Association of Public Health Officers, adding that the ongoing political crisis is causing anxiety and stress to people, service providers and the health system at large.
Our health care delivery system is ill equipped and cannot withstand any military or civil unrest. The consequences of which will amount to unimaginable human suffering, damage to the health infrastructure and reversal of health gains.
As primary frontline health care service providers providing 24/7 essential health care services to Gambians and non- Gambians alike, we wish to add our voice in expressing our dismay towards the outgoing President’s decision to challenge the election results after conceding defeat to President elect. We therefore impress on the outgoing President to respect the choice of the Gambian people as demonstrated in the just concluded Presidential election. We hope that he will reverse his decision and hand over power to President elect Adama Barrow. The outgoing president has on many occasions expressed his love and admiration for Gambians especially women and children. He should therefore consider the plight of Gambian women and children who are the most vulnerable during military or civil unrest. We also call on the security forces to stand in solidarity with Gambians to maintain peace and tranquility that The Gambia is known for.
We salute all nationals and the International community for their concerted efforts to ensure peace and stability is maintained in our beloved country.
