Twelve years ago one of Gambia’s leading journalist, Deyda Hydara, co-founder of the Point newspaper and AFP reporter at the time, was killed exactly on a Friday like today around Kanifing Police Intervention Unit station and to date not a single arrest is made in connection with the killing.

What is wrong with our police and intelligence units; how can such a killing take place for this long without a trace or arrest of anyone in connection to this heinous crime?   How do you think his wife has felt over these hard and difficult 12 years? Not to talk about his children who are all rendered fatherless for this time, how about his staff who love him so much, and what about us his colleagues in the media.

Thanks to Allah that a new government is coming in and we hope the investigations into the killing of Deyda will be reopened and handled professionally. We hope the new government will not fail like the Jammeh regime failed to investigate this gruesome killing of a good citizen like Deyda.

People who think killing this veteran will be an end to his ideas are now proven wrong as 12 years later the Point newspapers is still around and going strong bravo to the team; though some of the pages are missing as they went down temporarily with Deyda, the likes of Good morning Mr. President but with time these pages will soon re surface.

We at the Daily News join our esteem readership and the entire Gambia Press Union members, staff at Print Newspaper, family members of late Deyda Hydara and Gambian at whole to pray for the departed Soul and hope very soon justice will overruled the injustice in his case and that of all other cases.

Long live press freedom and long live the Gambia.

Signed
