QUESTION OF THE DAY

WHY HAS THE ECOWAS NOT SHOWN ITS INTEREST IN SENDING AN OBSERVER MISSION FOR THE ELECTION?

The Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission has indicated in his interview that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is yet to indicate that it intends to send an observer mission to The Gambia for the forthcoming presidential election.

Some months ago this year the ECOWAS sent a fact finding mission to The Gambia ahead of the presidential election to facilitate the evaluation of all factors relating to the election. The mission met all stakeholders of the election including the IEC, political parties, the government, civil society organisations, the media and some diplomatic missions. The mission was supposed to write a report but this report was not made public.

Foroyaa will find out from the ECOWAS office whether they will be sending an observer mission or not. Foroyaa will also find out the level of involvement of the EU in monitoring the election.
