QUESTION OF THE DAY
Why is Dembo ‘Touray’ Darboe still not released?
He is still not released even though he is reported to be under treatment for psychiatric problems. The State has acknowledged that he is under custody but has not gone to the stage of charging him with a crime. It is the family that reported that he has been taking treatment and has done well with medication that was left at home.
The law is clear. Nobody should be detained for more than 72 hours without appearing before the court.
The role of the media is to hold the State accountable to the people. The people are the final judges. They have power to decide the fate of people who weird executive authority. They are the ones who should decide whether the executive and its agents respect and uphold the Constitution or not. This is why those whose voices are restricted by arrest and detention need the media for amplification so that people will know that they are still being unlawfully detained.
This is why Foroyaa will never stop detailing the conditions of such detainees.
