WHY PAY FOR REPLACEMENT OF VOTERS’ CARDS?
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced its commencement of a four months long voting cards replacement exercise yesterday, 1 June 2016, which will last until 29th September 2016. This will enable those whose cards are lost, mutilated, burnt or defaced to vote in the forthcoming elections, according to a press release.
This announcement has enticed many Gambians but they keep asking why they have to pay D100; that while it will not be difficult for some to get D100 this is extremely difficult for many others, especially the youth. Some even ask the question whether they have to pay for their birth right.
Some readers also ask whether the exercise will be extended to deleting the names of dead voters from the register of voters, noting that the last registration was in 2011 and thousands of voters have died.
