QUESTION OF THE DAY

WHY IS GAMBIA UNDER INTERNATIONAL RADAR?

The Gambia is being discussed at the level of the Security Council, the AU Commission and the ECOWAS Commission. The Gambia is part of the UN, the AU and ECOWAS. Hence it knows the standards set for good governance and the rule of law.

The government has a constitution which forbids detention for more 72 hours without trial, torture and arbitrary actions. No one is above the law but there is also a lawful way of conducting arrests, investigations, detentions and trials.

Hence Gambia is under international radar to gauge whether the authorities are conducting the affairs of the country on the basis of the protocols it has signed and agrees to implement. It is for the authorities to sit down and ask themselves what they are doing wrong and right and act with spirit to remedy the wrong and consolidate the right in order to meet the requisite standards of modern governance.
