WHERE ARE THE 23 ARRESTEES?

These are the questions that family members, friends and loved ones as well as party enthusiasts are asking.

No one should be detained for more than 72 hours without being released or appearing before a court.

No self-respecting law enforcing body would disrespect the Constitution which is the fundamental law of the country with impunity.

Foroyaa has been following the cases of those arrested on Thursday and Saturday. Those arrested on Thursday were led by Solo Sandeng and those arrested on Saturday were led by Lawyer Ousainou Darboe. We have received reports from family members of people who were arrested who stood to watch as spectators out of curiosity. We have been informed that more than a dozen people have been released so far. We will continue or investigation as we receive more information from families of the releases.

Furthermore, we cannot see how the state will fail to take Lawyer Ousainou Darboe and his colleagues to court or release them by today after the 72 hour expiry. Failure to do so will intensify the campaign against unlawful detention.

In our view, the political context of the case should in fact excite dialogue rather than proceedings of any sort in court. Reason should prevail. Law must be tempered with reason in order for justice to be done and be seen to be done.
