As we go to press, Foroyaa is being informed that D1.7 million is owed to farmers after submitting their groundnuts. Foroyaa sought clarification on the story, but is still unable to access the authorities at National Food Security Processing and Marketing Corporation (formerly GGC).
It is best for the institution to receive complaints through the media and clarify issues in the public interest. Foroyaa would like to know the quantity of nuts purchased so far, the amount spent and the amount outstanding. Such information should be given periodically to the farmers.
There is indication that traders are coming from Senegal to sell their nuts in The Gambia. There is no indication that Gambian farmers are crossing the border to go to Senegal to sell their nuts. There is also no indication of Chinese middlepersons coming to The Gambia to buy nuts. Foroyaa is trying to get a global picture of the state of play of the groundnut trade this year and when the trade season will come to an end.
